New The Life of Jesus for Today, Ronald J.
Allen, Westminster/John Knox Press, Louisville KY; 2008 Allen
examines the world Jesus lived in and emphasizes that Jesus was a Jew of his
time. He then looks at the various parts of Jesus life and death focusing on
some of the new understandings of the culture and understandings about the
literary focus of each gospel. He works with Jesus’ life through the synoptic
gospels and then reviews it in light of John’s Gospel. His final chapter
focuses on how we can understand Jesus’ life and teachings today. Each
chapter closes with a series of discussion questions, and there is a very
short bibliography at the end. New Barclay’s Guide
