Parish Discernment Process

The parish discernment process is part of the work of discerning a call to ordination; these books are available to help parish discernment committees look at the role of the layperson, the deacon, and the priest as they help listen for the applicant’s call.

Discernment may be used in a variety of group experiences of a congregation. Below are listed some materials we have available to help groups in various situations.

This folder describes the various ministries of this group, all of which depend heavily on spiritual discernment. They do conflict resolution, vision casting, and group formation as well as teaching discernment.

 

A Hidden Wholeness, The Journey toward an Undivided Life – Parker J. Palmer, Jossey-Bass; 2004

Palmer talks about how easy it is for us to become “divided”; we feel one way inside but show a mask to the world. He shows how this come about and then talks about finding our true self in the presence of our peers, in a small community that is safe and faithful. He then discusses how powerful this wholeness can be in reaching out into the world. 

 

Exploring Your Spiritual JourneyWhitaker School of Theology, Epis Diocese of Michigan; 2005

For those who seek a discernment process for their life, the Whitaker School in Detroit as developed a 9 month course to help people determine their gifts and how they might best be expressed. It is not only for those seeking an ordained ministry but also those who might find a better ministry as a lay person, living out the ministry of the baptized.
